Choreographer/directors, Rosine Bena and Ananda Bena-Weber, have reimagined this traditional symbolic tale The Sleeping Beauty (La Belle Au Bois Dormant ) for a contemporary audience. The search for true love is a universal quest that defies time and space. In today’s society, we can search for love on the internet in all parts of the world and patiently sift through suitors until we find our match.  So the heroine of this story must wait patiently through the passage of time in order to find true love.

In mythology, there is always a character with a sinister nature. In a sense the character is bad -but for a reason- in order to be beaten. The hero or heroine must rise to the occasion to win the fray- to conquer him or herself. Bena and Bena-Weber expand this idea by developing the story through the character of Malefique (the evil fairy), who visits the christening of King Florestan’s daughter (Aurore) to gift the child with an evil curse. This curse makes it impossible for any man to withstand the evil trials of Malefique in order to win the heart of Aurore.  On her 16th birthday Aurore pricks her finger and is put into a deep sleep. Malefique surrounds the entire Kingdom by a thick forest filled with frightening creatures. Having met Aurore in a dream, Prince Florimund ( after a long search) arrives to prove that true love conquers all.

Drawing inspiration from the many versions of this tale, this new interpretation of the story carries a universal message that defies the passage of time.

This wonderful love story in dance with the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky is considered to be one of the “favorite” ballets of all time. It was based on the tale by Charles Perrault and was first performed in three acts in 1890 in Russia with choreography by Marius Petipa. It was first presented in the United States by the Sadler’s Wells Ballet in 1949. SNB’s new version of Sleeping Beauty (A Fairy’s Tale) will be performed as a Prologue and two act ballet. SNB’s Sleeping Beauty features Hikari Jaconson ( Oakland Ballet, Atlantic City Ballet); Juan Magacho  ( Theatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro/ San Jose Dance Theatre); Domingo Rubio (Joffrey Ballet/ Ballet Hispanico); Ananda Bena-Weber (Reno Ballet/ United Solo Award Winner/ Jazz Tap Ensemble);  David Naquin (SNB and Oklahoma City Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, Eugene Ballet); Sara Weir (Sacramento Ballet/ SNB Principal) and Anthony McMenamy (SNB Soloist) in featured roles and the SNB full company of professional dancers augmented by students from the SNB Academy and dance schools in the community.
